All previous messages on the list are stored and made available for your inspection. There are several ways to check for older messages. A lot depends on how old the messages are that you are looking for.
To find messages within the last six months or so, you can search the regular list in a number of ways.
First, you can search -- such as by topic or sender -- using special commands. Below are examples of some common searches that you may want to try.
Secondly, you can point your broswer to http://listserv.aol.com/archives/submini-l.html for a special AOL search engine. You will probably find this more convenient. For either of these options, you must already be a member of the list.
Lastly, you can use LISTQUEST at http://www.listquest.com/lq/search.html?ln=submini which is a listserver search engine. You do not need to be a member of the list to use LISTQUEST, but it may not have the latest messages.

For messages older than six months, please go to the ATTIC, where old messages are stored. You do not need to be a member of the list to search in the ATTIC.

Note that search commands, like all other commands, should be sent to

1. Retrieving missed mail

To catch up on missed mail, or to find mail on a specific date, search using the wildcard * symbol. This will give you all the mail for the date(s) searched. In the example below, you are looking for all posts dated 1/03/97 - 1/04/97.

EXAMPLE:

Send this command to listserv@listserv.aol.com:

search * in SUBMINI-L from 97/01/03 to 97/01/04

LISTSERV will respond with something like this.....

> search * in SUBMINI-L from 97/01/03 to 97/01/04

-> 26 matches.

SINCE OPTION: You could also send a search such as this:

which would retrieve all mail since January 3, 1997.

2. Retrieving mail from a particular subscriber

Suppose that you have a favorite subscriber or you recall that a particular subscriber answered a question that you forgot to save at the time. To see all messages ever sent by that person, the search needs to contain the subscriber's name as it appears in the e-mail address. For example, to search for messages from Feldman, you would need to search for Feldman.

EXAMPLE:

Send this command to listserv@listserv.aol.com

search * in SUBMINI-L where sender contains feldman

LISTSERV will respond with something like this:

> search * in SUBMINI-L where sender contains feldman

-> 33 matches.

3. Retrieving mail on a topic

Searching the archives using keywords allows you to find information on selected topics. If you do not get the messages that you hoped for, change the keywords and try again. Note that it is possible to use Boolean and/or logic and also to combine several types of searches, e.g., by keyword and name, by sender and date, etc.

EXAMPLES:

To locate messages regarding film slitters, send this command to listserv@listserv.aol.com:

search slitter in submini-l

This will retrieve:

> search slitter in submini-l

-> 61 matches.

TOPICS USING AND/OR: Send this command to listserv@listserv.aol.com:

search MPL OR processing in SUBMINI-L to retrieve all posts with EITHER MPL OR processing. If you want to receive posts with both keywords in the text, use AND instead of OR.

TOPIC + DATE: If you are interested in specific topics only after a given date, you can do a search that specifies the topic and the date.

search MPL AND processing in SUBMINI-L SINCE 97/01/01 will retrieve all posts with BOTH MPL AND processing sent SINCE January 1, 1997.

TOPIC + SENDER: If you are interested in specific topics sent only by a specific subscriber, you can do a search that specifies the topic and sender.

search digest in SUBMINI-L where sender contains feldman will retrieve all posts about "digest" sent by feldman.
